Take the following steps to prepare to take advantage
of your chance to be on Capitol Hill. After a morning of public
policy briefings by our coalition partners, members of the
Administration, staff of the House Education and Labor Committee and
Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, you will have
the afternoon available to visit the offices of your Senators and
Representatives.
The NAPE Advocacy Toolkit can help you identify your
members of Congress, set up your visit and prepare you with general
briefing information.
Take these helpful steps to get ready for your
visit -
1. Go
to the NAPE Advocacy Toolkit. (If this is the
first time you have accessed materials in the member's only section
of the NAPE website, start by
signing up on the homepage where you will be able to create your own
user name and password.)
2. Find your
Senators at www.senate.gov and your
Representative at www.house.gov . Take note of
their email address and the phone number to their Washington, DC
office.
3. Send an email
or letter attached to an email requesting a visit for Wednesday,
April 14, 2010 anytime after 1:30pm. Use the letter template provided on
the NAPE PDI website.
4. A few days
after you have sent your letter requesting an appointment, call the
Senator's or Representative's office and ask to speak to the their scheduler to ensure you get an
appointment scheduled.
5.
Although you will be fully briefed on the current issues facing
Congress that are of concern to us on the morning of Advocacy Day,
you can take the time between now and then to review a few key
documents to help you be fully prepared for your legislator visits.
Review NAPE's Public Policy Agenda for 2010 to get a
broad overview of the issues of concern to NAPE that are on the
congressional calendar for this year. We expect the reauthorization
of the Workforce Investment Act and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act to be the two
primary pieces of legislation that will be on the minds of Congress
when we are in town. As well as two bills currently making their way
through the House - the Pathways Advancing Career Training Act and the
Women and Workforce Investment in Nontraditional
Jobs Act and one bill
already passed in the House and making its way through the Senate - the Paycheck Fairness Act. Briefing
materials on each of these bills will be sent to you two weeks prior
to the conference as well as reviewed in detail the morning of
Advocacy Day.
